2. Pendulation
Titrate between a sensation of discomfort and a sensation of safety in your body. Spend 20 seconds noticing the discomfort, then 30 seconds focusing on a neutral or pleasant sensation. This teaches your nervous system that it can move between states without getting stuck.

3. Somatic Tracking

The act of naming and describing a sensation engages the thinking brain, which downregulates the emotional brain. You're not trying to make the sensation go away — you're simply observing it. Paradoxically, when you stop trying to change the sensation, it often changes on its own.

The vagus nerve is the main highway of the parasympathetic nervous system. It runs from your brainstem down to your abdomen, connecting your brain to your heart, lungs, and digestive system. Strengthening vagal tone improves your ability to return to calm after stress.

- Humming or chanting — The vibration stimulates the vagus nerve where it passes through the vocal cords. Try humming your favourite song for 2 minutes.
- Cold exposure — Splash cold water on your face or end your shower with 30 seconds of cool water. The mammalian dive reflex activates the vagus nerve.
- Slow, extended exhales — Exhale longer than you inhale (try 4 counts in, 6 counts out). This directly stimulates the vagus nerve.
- Gargling — Yes, really. The muscle contraction in your throat stimulates the vagus nerve.
